As 2014 comes to an end, I find myself reflecting…I think about our family’s present journey, and about the generations before me. Specifically, about the values my dad passed on as I am guided by these principles to this day.
1. Equality– loving people and treating everyone fairly. Family is not just blood– I consider our entire team to be family.
2. Honesty– staying rooted to the ground, and following through on what you say. People need to trust you.
3. Integrity– staying true to your values.
My father was a very humble man, and it warms my heart to see his core values passed down, and embraced by my children and grandchildren.
With Jenn’s two kids, the Hopcott family is now four generations deep. As our family has grown, we’ve also entered a new chapter at the farm. Jenn has impressed everyone by stepping up to manage Hopcott Meats. Her drive and passion are a genuine inspiration to me. And, it gives me great joy to support Travis as he embarks on his own journey, while still remaining committed to the farm.
We have been blessed with loyal customers and been presented with opportunities to expand. But I keep asking myself the question, “Why?”
If we grow, there will be new demands, requiring more of our time. I strongly believe in work-life balance, and I want assurance that my kids keep their priorities in order.
Sure, growth brings more money, but at what cost? It definitely doesn’t buy happiness. We are blessed by God, and are fortunate enough to share abundance with others. We don’t want excess, and everything we need is already provided for us. I suppose we could buy a new luxury car, but I’m quite happy with my little pick-up truck.
I’m not sure what 2015 will bring but I am certain about our commitment, passion, and community involvement . The Hopcotts have lived here for decades, and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
